Pistol Grips

How to Properly Shoot a Pistol   by Adam Stenway

While all shooting is tricky and requires special techniques, pistol shooting is particularly tricky for the new shooter. I have frequently seen shooters at the range trying out their pistols and failing miserably. On one occasion, I remember an individual shooting a glock at 6 inch targets at 25 yards, and he could not hit a single target. When I stepped up with a 1911 and hit one after another, he said “that must be a nice gun.” The truth is, the gun had nothing to do with it.

There are several key techniques that are necessary to pistol shooting. First, you must have a good grip on your pistol. The proper grip is taking your strong hand and putting the web of your hand as high on the gun as possible. The muzzle of the gun should be in line with your elbow or slightly inward. Your finger should not be on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Your weak hand should wrap around your strong hand, with the pad of your weak hand pressing against the grip of the gun. By squeezing your weak hand around the grip, you can maintain a strong hold on the gun.

Once you have a good grip, you need to align your sites properly. You should bring the gun up to your line of sight with your arms fairly straight out. When you line up the sights, the front sight should be clear, and appear between the back sights.

Next, you need to be ready to use the trigger. Trigger control is extremely important! You should place the pad of your finger on the trigger, not the joint of your finger! You can practice pulling the trigger back with an unloaded pistol, trying not to shake the gun (or jerk it) as you pull the trigger back. When you are first learning, the break of the sear should “surprise” you.

When aiming the gun downrange, you should have a clear view of the front sight at all times, even if your target is a bit fuzzy. You should not aim at the target generally, but pinpoint an exact spot, like the head of a pin. When you aim with the front sight, you should use the exact middle of the sight with this pinpoint spot. This is the only way you can shoot accurately at long distances.

I hope you enjoyed reading this summary of pistol shooting basics. These are the key techniques that can revolutionize your pistol shooting. Now go out and have some fun!

If Renegades proves to be the last Rage Against the Machine album to feature singer Zack de la Rocha, who quit the band after nine years, it’s a cool way to go out. Produced by Rick Rubin, Renegades is a salute to the artists who made Rage what they are–or were. While it’s easy to hear Rage’s rap roots in songs from Afrika Bambaataa, EPMD, and Volume 10, it’s more interesting to see their take …
